Things to talk about in a GRWM
A get-ready-with-me needs talk you can keep up while your hands are busy — no long setups, nothing you have to stop and think about. Here are 48, all answerable in under a minute without putting the brush down.
While you are still starting
Light enough to answer over the first step of a routine.
- Which household chore would you happily pay someone double to never do again?
- If your morning routine had a theme song, what would be playing right now?
- Which completely useless thing are you weirdly good at?
- Which fictional character's wardrobe would you raid first?
- Which emoji do you overuse to the point of embarrassment?
- Which trend did you swear you'd never try, and then tried anyway?
- Which cheap thing you own has outperformed everything expensive?
- Which one thing in this room would you be genuinely sad to lose?
- What's the first thing you do with your phone in the morning?
- Which product have you rebought more than three times?
- How long does this whole routine take when nobody is watching?
- Which part of getting ready do you secretly find relaxing?
- What did you actually have for breakfast today?
- Which app do you keep deleting and then reinstalling?
- How do you behave when you are already running late?
- Which chore have you been avoiding for more than a month?
- Which small thing has been annoying you all week?
- Which question do you get asked most, and are you sick of it yet?
- Which friend would tell you honestly that an outfit is not working?
- What is next on your list to buy, and how long has it been there?
- What are you looking forward to this week, even a small thing?
- How do you want to feel by the end of today?
Small opinions, strongly held
The register the format lives in. Low stakes, real view.
- What could you give a twenty-minute talk on with no notes at all?
- What is a small thing you do every day that would make no sense to anyone watching?
- Which comment on one of your posts have you thought about more than you should?
- When did you last change your mind about something small?
- Who would you call first with good news, and why them?
- Who in your life is unreasonably good at checking in on you?
- Who taught you something about getting ready that you still do their way?
- What would your younger self be thrilled that you own now?
This week, specifically
Recent and concrete beats timeless and vague, every time.
- What did you spend far too long thinking about yesterday?
- Which kind of compliment makes you uncomfortable?
- Who would be least surprised to see you talking to a camera?
- Who do you get ready differently for, and how does it change?
- What do the people closest to you tease you about?
- Who do you copy without meaning to?
- Which version of yourself are you dressing like today?
- Which bit of this routine will you have dropped in five years?
The ones that go somewhere
For when the routine is long and the conversation has warmed up.
- Which part of your own face have you made peace with?
- Which compliment from years ago do you still think about?
- When did you last feel genuinely good at something?
- What do people tend to get wrong about you when they first meet you?
- Which habit of your own have you quietly stopped trying to fix?
- What did you say yes to recently that you wish you hadn't?
- What would you want someone new to know about you early on?
- Which part of your life do you keep off camera on purpose?
- Which age are you quietly looking forward to being?
- Where would you like to be getting ready a year from now?
The hard part isn’t answering. It’s choosing.
Spin it, then film whatever it lands on. You get the question you would have scrolled past, which is usually the one worth filming.
Press spin. You do not get to pick.
Does any of this actually work?
The format is older than the talking. Know Your Meme documents one of the earliest get-ready-with-me videos as Shaaanxo’s upload of 14 January 2011 — makeup applied over music, products shown, no commentary. That is a user-edited wiki and we did not confirm “earliest” independently, so take it as one of the earliest documented rather than settled. The observation that matters is ours: the early ones were music and product. Talking while getting ready came later, and it is now the whole appeal.
The scale is large but the number people quote is wrong. TODAY reported on 16 May 2023 that #GRWM had accumulated more than 99 billion views on TikTok. That is journalism citing TikTok, not a figure we verified at source, and it is now dated. The “157 billion” version circulating elsewhere we could not verify at all, and we are not repeating it.
How a GRWM is shot happens to be how strong parasocial response is shot. Thelwall and colleagues (Journal of Data and Information Science, 2022) content-analysed the highest- and lowest-engagement videos for each of 117 UK female influencers and found “gazing at the camera, head and shoulders framing, discussing personal issues, and focusing on the influencer associated with higher strong PSI potential.” The design is correlational and uses comment language as its measure. The link to GRWM is ours — a seated get-ready is filmed face-to-camera at head and shoulders almost by definition. They did not study GRWMs.
This only works if the getting ready is real. A GRWM where nothing is actually happening is a talking head with worse lighting and a worse angle, and viewers clock it immediately — the format's whole appeal is that you are doing something else, which is what makes the talking feel incidental rather than performed. If you are not genuinely mid-routine, film a piece to camera and let it be that.
