Instagram Q&A questions

A story Q&A lives or dies on speed — one sticker, one question, one answer short enough to finish before the story does. Here are 48 answerable in fifteen seconds, which is the whole constraint.

One-word answers

The ones that keep a story chain moving.

Quick but not throwaway

Still fifteen seconds. Slightly more of you in the answer.

The ones people screenshot

Short answers that carry more than they look like they do.

Worth breaking the format for

Rare. Use one, not five, and let it run long.

The hard part isn’t answering. It’s choosing.

Spin it, then film whatever it lands on. You get the question you would have scrolled past, which is usually the one worth filming.

Press spin. You do not get to pick.

Does any of this actually work?

The questions are not anonymous to you, and a lot of people answering them think they are. Instagram launched the Questions sticker on 10 July 2018, describing it as a way “to start conversations with your friends so you can get to know each other better.” Their own announcement is explicit: “you’re able to see who submitted each response in your viewers list where it’s private… when you share that response in your story, your friend’s photo and username will not be shown.” The name is hidden from other viewers, not from the account owner. How widely that is misunderstood we have no data on, so we are not putting a number on it.

The format is enormous and the usage data for this sticker is not public. Instagram Stories reached 500 million daily users by January 2019, up from 400 million in June 2018 — reported by TechCrunch from Facebook’s Q4 2018 earnings call, which we did not read directly, and old enough now that it is a floor rather than a figure. For the Questions sticker specifically, we found no usage number published by Meta. The “interactive stickers get 15% more taps” claim repeated across marketing blogs traces to no source we could find, so it is not on this page.

Disappearing makes it easier, and that is probably the point. Bayer and colleagues (Information, Communication & Society, 2016) ran a two-week experience sampling study (n = 154) plus interviews (n = 28) and found Snapchat interactions “were perceived as more enjoyable, and associated with more positive mood, than other communication technologies.” That was Snapchat in 2014–15 with college students, not Instagram Stories — the idea that a 24-hour lifespan lowers the stakes fits a story Q&A, but it has not been tested there.

This format needs people to send things in, and the question sticker is a poor prompt on its own — an empty box gets empty answers. Posting a specific question rather than an open sticker reliably gets more replies, and if you have no audience sending anything, you are not running a Q&A, you are talking to yourself with extra steps. Use these to seed the box, not to fake it.
